Though recent global dynamics have shifted from the intense confrontations witnessed between the US and Soviet Union during the Cold War, complex and multifaceted geopolitical risks are becoming ever more pronounced as seen in the Russo-Ukraine war, Israel-Palestine conflict, tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, and escalating tensions between North and South Korea. Given this seismic shift, no one country can ensure its security alone.
In this rapidly changing security environment, global demand for defense technology has surged, and the defense market has significantly expanded. Today, the defense industry is a key national strategic sector that merges security with economic considerations, serving as a decisive measure of national strength.
The Republic of Korea, through decades of dedicated efforts by the government, businesses, and its citizenry, has firmly established itself as a leading supplier in the global defense market. However, this achievement comes with new challenges, including protecting defense technology, responding to supply chain disruptions, and enhancing defense cooperation with partner countries.
To address these issues, we will host the Defense Industry Security Conference 2024, bringing together respected defense and security experts, as well as business leaders from throughout the country and the world with the aim of countering defense security threats and boosting public-private and international defense cooperation.
Our goal is to understand the rapidly evolving global defense ecosystem and to create a platform for productive and in-depth discussions that can ease friction between defense cooperation and national security.
We hope to explore concrete solutions to the various challenges of deepening international defense cooperation, improve understanding of governmental and corporate defense security response efforts, and broaden the scope of research in this field.
We look forward to pooling wisdom to derive alternatives that can strengthen national security while enhancing defense cooperation, contributing to the next major advancement in the ROK’s defense industry.
